Welcome to Our Program

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the English as a Second Language Institute (ESLI) at Jackson State University (JSU).

The ESLI offers non-credit courses in English as a second language. Since 1997, an ESL-Add-on Endorsement has been part of the JSU curriculum. Presently, the ESLI conducts ESL training in four categories: (1) for entering internationals who plan to enroll in long term academic programs; (2) regular ESL classes for international students who require additional ESL training; (3) survival English training for internationals; and (4) TOEFL preparation.

Since the year 2000, the ESLI has been a member of American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP). AAIEP serves as a governing body of intensive English programs in the United States. Other memberships are: Teachers of English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and Mississippi Foreign Languages Association (MFLA).

Since 2005, the ESLI has been offering night classes for internationals who cannot come in the morning. In the Spring of 2007, the ESLI launched the first iBT TOEFL administration in our facility.

So far, individuals from four continents come to ESLI to study. Countries like, Ukraine, Poland, Palestine, Russia, Czech Republic, South Korea, China, Japan, Venezuela, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, Mexico, Brazil, Angola, Guinea, Namibia, Turkey, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Libya, and etc. just to name a few.
